Dentist in Waterbury Explains What You Need to Know about Root Canals

Inside of a toothHas your dentist recently recommended that you have root canal therapy? If so, it is natural to be a bit hesitant about the procedure. Not only do they have a bad reputation for being painful, but you may have some questions about the necessity of the treatment. Since it will permanently alter your tooth, it is best to head into the appointment feeling confident about your decision. To help you make the right choice, there are some things you should know about the upcoming procedure with your dentist in Waterbury.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canals are commonly performed to save a severely damaged or infected tooth from needing to be extracted. On average, more than 15 million are performed each year. While they are common, many dentists try to avoid them if possible because it does involve permanently altering your tooth; however, there are times when it may be in your best interest to have the procedure performed. If your dentist has recommended that you have the treatment, there are several factors to keep in mind.

1. Get a Second Opinion

Prior to undergoing an invasive procedure, such as a root canal or tooth extraction, it is best to seek a second opinion. Although your dentist is qualified in dentistry, they may have overlooked another viable treatment option. It never hurts to get the advice of another dentist prior to committing to the treatment.

2. Root Canals aren’t Painful

Root canals have a very bad reputation for being painful. While this may have been true in the past, new advancements in dentistry now make them no worse than a traditional dental filling. With the use of new tools and methods, local anesthesia, and sedation, you will not feel any pain during the treatment.

3. You Must Care for the Tooth

After your root canal procedure, a dental crown will be placed over the tooth to restore its function and appearance; however, it also serves as an added layer of protection. Although the crown is not subject to decay, the underlying tooth can still be compromised.

To protect your tooth from additional damage, it is best to maintain your oral hygiene routine by brushing twice a day and flossing each night—including the dental crown. Although the crown is durable, avoid any habits that may cause it to break, such as using your teeth as tools or biting overly hard foods. In addition, visit your dentist twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. At each appointment, your dentist will check the crown and the tooth to ensure that no complications have developed.
