Waterbury dentist

In keeping with the recommendation from the American Dental Association, Dr. Marini and Dr. Mancini would like to see you and each member of your family twice a year for a dental cleaning and exam in order to maintain optimal oral health. Aside from the fact that all of us at Waterbury Smiles enjoy seeing our patients, we also want to help you maintain your healthy teeth and gums and avoid dental problems. Your Waterbury family dentist is dedicated to helping you enjoy a lifetime of healthy smiles, so don’t forget to schedule your biannual dental checkups.

There are actually three parts to a dental checkup:

  • Dental Cleaning
  • Clinical Examination
  • Head and Neck Exam

We know that you faithfully brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss at least once every day. Despite this routine, it can be difficult to reach certain spots—especially along the gum line. Our special equipment in the office allows us to thoroughly clean your teeth and remove any debris or plaque that you might miss. Plaque is a colorless biofilm that contains harmful bacteria. If not removed, plaque hardens to become tartar, which can trap bacteria against your teeth and along your gums. Then, you are more susceptible to both tooth decay and gum disease.

During the clinical exam portion of your dental checkup, we examine every part of your oral cavity. This examination begins with a careful look at each one of your teeth to find any signs of decay. We routinely take low-dose digital x-rays to see problems that may be hiding beneath the outer surface of tooth enamel or below the gum line. We’ll also check for loose teeth, broken or cracked teeth and damaged fillings. Then, we’ll assess the health of your gums and look for signs of gum disease.

Another step in a clinical exam is a check for visible symptoms of oral cancer; we’ll check your tongue, the floor and roof of your mouth as well as the inside of your cheeks. The checkup concludes with a head and neck examination, when we carefully look at your face, jaw, neck and head to find swellings or outward symptoms of TMJ.
