Do you have a tooth that is decayed or damaged? Do you the benefits that surround dental crowns in Waterbury? Has your dentist suggested this method of treatment to strengthen and protect your tooth from future damage? If you’re just now learning about this safe and effective dentistry solution, allow us to provide a crash course on what you can expect from these custom restorations.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

If you’ve been told you need a dental crown to protect your weak or damaged tooth, it’s likely you’re wondering, “Okay, but how long will it last?” The answer to this common question is anywhere from 5 to 15 years. While that might seem like a wide span, it’s up to you how long your dental crown will last.

How so?

Depending on how well you care and maintain your prosthetic will determine how long it will last. If you maintain good oral hygiene and continue with your regular six-month dental appointments, you’ll be enjoying your crown for more than a decade, but if you completely avoid brushing and flossing or refuse to give up that bad habit of chewing ice, you might find yourself back in the dentist chair needing a replacement.

What Can I Expect?

When the tooth that is injured or decayed is preparing for a dental crown, the following steps will typically be taken by your dentist:

  1. You’ll have a thorough examination and X-rays taken to determine how deep the infection, decay, or damage lies.
  2. Your dentist will administer local anesthesia or sedation to make you comfortable and begin to clean out the decayed portions of the tooth.
  3. Once the tooth is cleaned, it will be filled and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering.
  4. The dentist will then begin to shape and file down the tooth to ensure the crown fits snugly over the natural tooth.
  5. Impressions of your newly shaped tooth will be taken, so dental lab technicians can carefully craft a custom restoration for your individual needs. It will be designed to match the shape, size, and color of your other teeth, so it will blend in naturally with the rest of your smile.
  6. A temporary crown will be placed before the end of your first visit but will be removed once your permanent restoration is finished and ready to be placed.

How Can I Prolong the Life of My Dental Crown?

Once your crown is put into place and the dentist has given you the green light to return home and begin enjoying your new smile, there are some tips you should consider following to keep your artificial tooth lasting longer:

  • Brush your teeth for two full minutes, twice a day. Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste to prevent tooth decay and strengthen enamel.
  • Gently floss your teeth after every meal, or at least once a day.
  • Rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash to wash away any leftover bacteria or food particles.
  • Continue to see your dentist every six months for regular checkups and cleanings.
  • Avoid hard foods (i.e. ice, hard candy, raw vegetables), as they can damage your crown.
  • Limit sugary snacks because of the increased chance of harmful bacteria developing and causing additional problems such as tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease.

Dental crowns have been and will continue to be one of the most reliable and effective restorative solutions available. For years, dentists have helped patients achieve healthier smiles thanks to their ability to strengthen and protect. If you discover you could benefit from a dental crown, don’t wait. Talk to your dentist about how you can get started on a path to better oral health.
